“Toe Be, Or Not Toe Be…”

Before Sonnen battles Shogun this Saturday, I thought it would be fun to examine how close we all came to living in a parallel universe. All it would have taken was twenty-seven seconds of survival. Just twenty-seven seconds…

On April 27th, 2013, Jon Jones fought Middleweight powerhouse and perennial trash talker Chael Sonnen in a Light Heavyweight title bout few thought Sonnen deserved.

April 27th, 2013
UFC 159: Jones vs. Sonnen
Jon Jones (C) vs. Chael Sonnen (Light Heavyweight Championship)
Jon Jones def. Chael Sonnen via TKO (Elbows and Punches) at 4:33 of Round 1

“Toe Be, or Not Toe Be…?”

Just twenty-seven seconds
Is the time it would have took
To alter several storylines
Inside of history’s book

With Jones’s toe a mangled mess
The doctor would have stalled
Indulging just a single peek
Before the fight was called

Then Sonnen would have won the belt
And talked a thunderous storm
Propelling every rabid fan
To buzz within a swarm

That means at least another bout
But likely there’d be two
Which means another year or so
Of rerun Pay-Per-View

Devoid of any accidents
The fights would go to Jones
But what if Chael got lucky
And he somehow toppled Bones?

It isn’t all that crazy
In a sport with so much chance
Where knockouts land consistently
With just a grazing glance

If Chael could sneak another win
He’d never close his jaw
He’d freeze the whole division
In an ice you cannot thaw

Yet thankfully for all of us
The champion prevailed
Preventing any outcome
That would leave the viewers jailed

Just twenty-seven seconds
Is what needed to elapse
Just twenty-seven seconds
For our present to collapse

But since those final seconds
Never spiraled down the drain
The present and the future
Are secure in Jones’s reign

Bisping Refuses to Lose to a Donkey Kong Style

The oldest saying in the book is (be careful what you wish for because you just may get it) and Michael Bisping gets it. Bisping can sell a potential fight with his brash attitude and outspoken personality and the fact he can back up what he talks helps too. Bisping has gone 14-5 and has fought a laundry list of who’s who in the UFC today.

Bisping’s next opponent is Mark Munoz in the headlining event; they are set to square off at UFC Fight Night in Manchester on October 26, 2013. This bout will match up #6 Munoz who is highly regarded as one of today’s best MMA wrestlers in the middle weight division with heavy hands and #4 Bisping who has some of the best stand up in the middle weight division with good takedown defense.

On “UFC Tonight” Michael Bisping stated:

“He’s a great wrestler, but I think he’s one dimensional. Anybody who refers to themselves as having a Donkey Kong style, I refuse to lose to. I’m far too skilled for him. He’s going to try to take me to the ground and use these stupid punches that he throws. He’s very powerful and I’m not underestimating him. He’s a very accomplished wrestler. Listen, I’m going to punch him in the face repeatedly and eventually he’s going to fall down. On October 26, I’m going to kick his ass, and no one’s even going to think about him anymore. If they thought he was depressed before, on October 27, the day after the fight, he’s going to be really more depressed then.”

Bisping is simply doing what Bisping does best, that’s selling a fight, taking personal jabs, and attacking Munoz’s personal life and trials. Bisping knows these statements will trigger a rivalry and build a buzz around this match up.

One thing Bisping has to do in this bout is stay off his back. Bisping has very underrated takedown defense and has shown this ability against very game wrestlers including Chael Sonnen; however, many people believe Sonnen does not possess the take down quality of Mark Munoz. Munoz is arguably heavier handed than Sonnen and will use that to set up his takedown attempts.Once Munoz gets an opponent to the ground, he looks to implement his (donkykong) style.  Bisping is the crisper in the striking department. Munoz is outclassed in the kickboxing portion of this fight and Bisping is very crafty avoiding the takedown using footwork and controlling distance on top of a very strong sprawl.

This fight is sure to live up to its hype and will be a barn burner as each man is fighting to secure himself into the number one contender position leaving the loser of the bout to go back to the drawing board and regroup. Be sure you tune in on October 26, 2013 for UFC Manchester.
